Sound Familiar?
Many trained paralegals undercharge when working on a freelance or locum basis — either because they benchmark against their last salaried role, or because they have no structured way to calculate what the market actually pays for direct engagement.
You took a locum role at a rate you negotiated on the spot — without any market data. Six months later, you discovered a colleague doing the same work was charging 40% more. A structured rate calculation at the outset would have changed everything.
A small firm asked you to work directly for them on a project basis. You had no framework for what to charge — so you guessed. The Rule of Thirds methodology gives you a principled, defensible answer.
You passed your CILEx exams. You have NALP accreditation. But your rate still reflects your junior salary, not your qualification level. Your credentials have market value — this calculator quantifies it.

What Paralegals Say
Thousands of trained paralegals across the UK work on a freelance or locum basis without a clear framework for what to charge.
“I had been doing locum conveyancing work for three years and had no idea I was undercharging by nearly 30%. The calculator gave me a number I could actually defend — and the firm accepted it without question.”

“As a CILEx graduate, I knew my qualification had value — but I had no way to quantify it. This tool helped me understand exactly how my experience band and specialisation translate into a market rate.”
David T.

“The regulatory scope section alone was worth the £4.99. I now know exactly what I can and cannot do in each area — and I can show clients a clear, documented explanation of my role.”

Methodology
This calculator applies the Rule of Thirds — the foundational principle of UK law firm economics — to paralegal salary benchmarks. When a firm bills a client for a paralegal's work, that revenue is divided into three roughly equal parts: one-third to the paralegal's salary, one-third to firm overheads, and one-third to partner profit.
⅓ Salary
Direct compensation to the paralegal doing the work.
⅓ Overheads
Firm running costs: rent, insurance, technology, non-billable staff.
⅓ Profit
Partner distributions and return on equity for the firm's owners.
When a law firm or client engages a freelance paralegal directly, they bypass the overhead and profit thirds. A fair portion of those savings should flow back to the paralegal — reflected in their rate. The Profit Share Uplift slider allows you to adjust what share of the firm's profit margin you capture, while the Freelancer Overheadsslider accounts for your own running costs (CILEx/NALP membership, CPD, PI insurance, technology).
